Coastal dynamics and management. This line covers those geological and oceanographical aspects most directly applied to the coastal processes and their consequences to the human activity. It includes fields such as the recent evolution and present trends of the coastline, coastal erosion processes and natural hazards on the coast, quantification and modelling of coastal erosion, transport and sedimentation processes, due to wave and wind action, environmental mapping of littoral zones, coastal defense works, coastal pollution modelling, and in general, coastal planning and risk and impact assessment of a wide range of human activities in the coastal zone, such as tourism, offshore drilling, offshore aquaculture, etc. An outstanding aspect of this line is that related to the analysis of socio-political strategies for a correct coastal management, by combining data from littoral dynamics with the activities and aims of the social agents responsible for the use of coastal resources. A further aspect is the reconstruction of past historical storminess and the prediction of future scenarios induced by climate change. Coastal dynamics also plays a key role for the conservation and management of the underwater cultural heritage.

Antonis Chatzipavlis (PhD) is a post-doctoral researcher, graduated in Marine Sciences at the University of the Aegean. During his PhD Antonis investigated the morphological behavior of two different beach systems (i.e., a perched and an open sea beach) with the use of coastal videos, topo-bathymetric and hydrodynamic data, whereas he tested different artificial neural network techniques to project beach rotation (i.e. changes in shoreline position). His research focuses on the detailed study of nearshore hydro-morphodynamics and sediment dynamics, by emphasizing on coastal flood and erosion processes. Antonis also holds a skippers’ and a divers’ license, while he is an experienced free diver.

Sara Augusti (MSc) is a Ph.D. student graduated in Geological Sciences at the University of Ferrara. Her research focuses on the dynamics of two beaches in the Sinis Peninsula (Oristano), Sardinia, through a biogeomorphological analysis. She will combine high-precision shoreline data collected with RTK GPS with shoreline extraction using SAET with medium-resolution satellite imagery (Sentinel-2, Landsat-8, PRISMA) for medium-term monitoring. Additionally, a two-dimensional numerical model (XBeach) will simulate waves, currents, and sediment transport, providing insights into coastal evolution in response to climatic events. Aerial drone surveys and marine drone bathymetric studies further analyse beach profiles and shallow waters.

Project Framework

Estuarine coastlines make up a significant part of the coasts of Europe. At the same time, estuaries comprise some of the most heavily industrialised and inhabited areas. Increased development of these shallow water systems has not only accentuated concerns over deteriorating environmental quality, but the resultant requirement for essential remedial activity has placed serious economic strain on the various users. Estuarine systems play a very important role in the sedimentary cycle, being one of the principal routes of the sedimentary exchanges between land and sea, often acting as sedimentary sinks. Therefore, they may form some of the most polluted environments in Europe, requiring special studies as developed during the project. The results of the project will be presented during the STRAEE workshop in September 2002 in Ferrara.

During the SWAMIEE project an interdisciplinary approach, based upon established and innovative research methods, was adopted to identify and comprehend the complex processes involved. Not only the long-term evolution of these systems was studied, but also the medium- and short-term response to both natural and anthropogenic forcing. The STRAEE workshop will allow to sum up the recent increased knowledge on aspects of estuarine development, within the key objectives outlined below:

1. The understanding, at specific industrialised and non-industrialised locations, of the movement of water and sediment, at a variety of time-scales. This approach encompasses both well established and innovative techniques, developed by the participants of the SWAMIEE consortium.

2. The integration of various data sets into predictive numerical models, for use in the establishment of regional patterns of water and sediment movement and their sensitivity to changes in the controlling mechanisms. This requires that the natural evolution of the system is modelled and that a variety of anthropogenic influences is superimposed.
